Meet the Inklings

A photo of the members of the Inklings, including Barbara Tifft Blakey

A long time ago someone told me that there is no such thing as good writing—it is all rewriting. I’ve yet to meet an author who considers a first draft worthy of publication. Along with that is the truth that it is difficult to see our own weaknesses—whether we are speaking about errors in writing or flaws in our character. It takes a spirit-filled mentor to help us walk in a Christ-like manner, and it takes knowledgeable critique partners to help us craft exceptional novels.

I am fortunate to be a member of The Inklings—a critique group that meets weekly for the purpose of sharing what we’ve written and receiving feedback. What works? What doesn’t? Each person brings his or her unique perspective and skill set to our group. In the picture, we are celebrating the launch of Debby Lee’s newest book, Beneath a Peaceful Moon. Debby is in the middle.

As the only guy in our group, Kyle Pratt helps us write believable male protagonists. His writing is action-packed, encouraging us to include tension in our chapters.

Our senior member is Carolyn Bickel, one of the first members of the group which began decades ago with Joyce Scott and Bob Hansen. Carolyn writes sweet homespun stories that warm the heart.

Debby has penned a number of romance novels so brings her understanding of romance to the table.

I’m standing next to her, and next to me is Heather Alexander. Heather writes middle grade fiction. She challenges us to make sense with our characters’ words and actions, looking for consistency.

Julie Zander is taking the picture, so not in view. As a journalist and regular contributor to her local newspaper, Julie keeps us on task with grammar rules, especially those pesky commas. She is the queen of spotting weak words such as “was, get, some.”

Missing from the photo is Kristie Kandoll, a kindred spirit who writes historical fiction with accuracy and devotion.

Any success I’ve enjoyed as an author is in part because of this group of Christian, knowledgeable, dedicated authors. If you could meet them, you’d completely understand why I considered myself especially blessed.
